Just Because You Are Never Too Old, Doesn’t Mean That You Should
What Happened When I Took Up BMXing
“I need a new bike!” my son yells as he wheels out his orange bike out of the garage. He looks so big next to the bike. The bike so small.
“Indeed,” I say, “obviously it shrunk over the winter.”
“I want a fast one!”
I think back to my childhood. I had a red bike. I don’t know what kind it was, but I beat many in races on it. Boys had BMX bikes. That was the thing to have. “We’ll find you one,” I say.
BMX
That night I googled “BMX.”
Images of BMX bikes, BMX parks, and cyclists doing stunts appeared on the screen.
BMX stands for Bike Motocross. In 2008 BMX racing became an Olympic event. In 2021 the IOC added a second BMX event: BMX Freestyle.
I stared at the images. Do it. Get a bike. Find a bumpy track. Learn some stunts.
“Let’s get BMX bikes,” I tell my son the next day.
“A BMX? You are getting one too?”
“Yeah!”
“Okay.”
My son had no idea about the BMX stunts his mother had planned.
